A marketing agency runs campaigns. A fractional CMO runs marketing and owns the revenue number. If you already have someone internally directing strategy and you need execution, hire an agency. If the person directing strategy is you, and you are also running the company, you need a fractional CMO.

Both options get described as “outsourced marketing,” which is why owners compare them on price. They are not the same purchase. One buys hands. The other buys a head of marketing, and in a good engagement, the hands come with it.

The Hidden Cost of an Agency

An agency needs direction. Someone has to set the goals, approve the budget, decide which channel gets more money next quarter and judge whether the reports describe real progress. In most companies that person is a marketing manager, and that salary belongs in the true cost of the agency.

Without that person, direction falls to the owner. The agency keeps working and the reports keep arriving, but nobody is connecting what the agency does to what the sales team closes. Owners in this position often hire a second or third agency to fix the gaps, and end up managing vendors instead of running the company.

When an Agency Genuinely Is the Right Answer

Hire an agency when the leadership already exists. If you have a capable marketing manager or director who sets strategy, owns the budget and holds vendors accountable, an agency gives that person execution capacity without adding headcount. In that structure, a fractional CMO would duplicate a role you already pay for.

An agency also fits when the need is narrow: one channel, one project, one launch. A website rebuild does not need a CMO.

What a Fractional CMO Should Include

Not every fractional CMO offer is the same. Before you sign, check for three things.

A team attached. A fractional CMO who only advises leaves you to hire the people who do the work, which brings back the agency problem. Look for an engagement where the team that executes comes with the leadership.

Systems you own. Ad accounts, tracking, the CRM and reporting should be set up in your name, so the engagement leaves you with an asset rather than a dependency.

The sales side covered. Marketing that stops at the lead leaves money on the table. At DMN8 Partners we work both sides of the revenue cycle: finding the opportunity through marketing, then helping close it through outbound work on your customer database and unclosed proposals, plus sales coaching for your reps.

What That Looks Like in Practice

Three documented results from DMN8 engagements:

  • A plumbing company grew from $750,000 to $1,605,000 in twelve months with no increase in marketing spend. Conversion rate rose 14%, and its membership program reached $15,160 per month in recurring revenue six months after launch.
  • A landscape and outdoor lighting company grew revenue 221% over twenty months. The founder later sold the business at 5.2 times net profit.
  • A residential flooring company cut Google Ads cost per lead 28% over six months and raised conversion from 8% to 14%. Monthly lead flow doubled by month nine with no increase in spend.
